GENERAL

Brake pads or discs grooved/worn/scored.

Action: Always replace brake components in full axle sets. Always fit new pads with new discs wherever possible for optimum performance.

Action: Vince's will replace discs that are under minimum thickness or unevenly worn/grooved. Replace and lubricate fitting kits. All brake components and sliding surfaces should be cleaned and lubricated where required. Calipers should be checked to ensure correct operation and replaced if necessary. Any caliper kits should be replaced if required.

Brake Systems

Brake Problems

When possible we share friendly advice and over the years have found customers really benefit from having an understanding of how their vehicle systems work.  Here's an outline of a standard braking system.

Most vehicles are equipped with front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. These are operated via a system consisting of a hydraulic circuit linked to the brake pedal. Pressure generated by the pedal is transmitted by the brake fluid in the hydraulic circuit to apply force to the brakes and in turn perform the braking action.

Sticking, seizing, juddering, pulling, grinding, smells, wheel heat, reduction in performance - these can all be signs

that your brakes may need attention. This section will help you understand the brakes on your car.

This diagram represents a typical vehicle’s braking system. In this illustration the vehicle is fitted with a brake disc, brake caliper and brake pads at the front whilst at the rear it is fitted with brake drums, wheel  cylinders and brake shoes. In both cases the pads and shoes, the most frequently replaced parts, are held in place with hardware or fitting kits.

Some vehicles are fitted with the brake disc and pad combination on all four wheels, whilst some older vehicles have brake shoes and drums all round. In both cases brake fluid is supplied from a reservoir and is then pressurised by

the action of the brake pedal.

Hydraulic brake fluid is then forced to either the brake calipers or wheel cylinders

which in turn force the pads or shoes on to the discs or drums – so stopping the vehicle.

The handbrake system has to operate separately to the action of the calipers and cylinders

and utilises cables to apply pressure to the shoes or discs, usually located on the rear axle.

Brake pull/judder

Under/over inflated tyre pressures.

Brake Disc ‘run-out’/Dirty hub mounting.

Sticking brake caliper(s).

Action: Vince's will check tyre pressures.

Check disc ‘run-out’ & hub mounting condition.

Check/service brake caliper(s).

Always clean the hub before installing new discs.

Brake noise/squeal

Reason: Unevenly worn brake pad surface condition caused by scored brake discs. Uneven wear between ‘in-board’ & ‘out-board’ pads. Disc ‘run-out’ caused by dirty/  contaminated hub mounting. Inadequate

lubrication of brake pad/brake caliper ‘contact points’. Worn/missing shims. Worn or broken anti-rattle springs

Action: Vince's will fit new brake pads and ensure shims, pins and springs are fitted correctly. Check brake discs and replace if necessary. Replace and lubricate fitting kits

Uneven Brake Wear

Uneven brake pad wear or imbalance

between ‘in-board’ & ‘out-board’ pads

Reason: Incorrect alignment of brake pads within caliper housing. Poor brake caliper alignment. Pad ‘sticking’ - brake caliper not sliding correctly. Caliper not cleaned

properly (excessive contamination). Lack of lubrication.

Action: Vince's will check/service brake caliper component. Replace fitting kits and lubricate ‘sliders’.

Excessive Temperatures

Discolouring & Surface cracks

Reason: Sticking brake caliper(s).

Brake/axle/wheel imbalance.

Disc blueing is also another indication

of excessive temperature operation.

Pad restriction within the caliper housing.

Disc below manufacturers recommended

minimum thickness.

Action: Vince's will renew pads.

Check/service brake caliper(s).

Renew discs if below minimum thickness.

Brake Pads

Brake pads consist of a special material to give long life and stable friction performance. The pistons in the caliper force the pads on to the disc to create friction and thus stop the vehicle. If worn or damaged the brake pads should be replaced with approved quality Pagid brake pads.

Brake Shoes

Brake shoes consist of specially formulated material for long life and safety. Pedal action moves the brake shoes apart (via the cylinders) into contact with the brake drums - thus stopping the vehicle. Replace worn, damaged or badly grooved brake shoes with quality Pagid replacements.

Brake Discs

The brake discs and calipers work together. The calipers force the pads on to the brake disc causing the vehicle to stop. Brake discs should be checked periodically for excessive wear and distortion. If any is found they should be replaced in pairs.

Brake Drums

Brake drums are usually fitted to the rear of a vehicle. The brake shoes acting on the inner surface of the brake drum creates friction to stop the vehicle. Check inside the drum for wear, deep grooving and surface damage, if any is found the drums should be replaced.

Brake Calipers

The calipers force the brake pads against the disc. Calipers should be thoroughly checked that all parts are working correctly and smoothly, inefficient calipers can cause low performance and excessive wear of brake pads and brake discs.

Brake Cylinders

Brake cylinders force the brake shoes on to the brake drum surface. It is important that brake cylinders work effectively, poor braking performance and increased wear can result from worn or seized parts. Replace as necessary.

Brake Hose

Brake hose carries the fluid that operates the brakes. Regular and thorough inspection will detect any leaks, bad seals, worn or damaged hose. Replace any not in good condition. Damage can lead to sudden fluid loss which can result in a reduction of braking pressure.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid levels should be topped up correctly. The brake fluid is relied upon to operate the braking components. Ensure the correct type is used and that no air is trapped in the system as this will result in poor braking levels, excessive pedal travel and a spongy brake pedal.

Accessories

When any component is replaced in the brake system it is best to take the opportunity to replace all the ancillary items - such as washers, shims, springs, retaining pins etc. This ensures that a safe and complete service and repair

is performed.
